VCS

VCS stands for Version Control System (see Wikipedia).
The predominant VCS as of 2022 is Git, which is open-source and distributed, though it is showing its weaknesses and we are looking into finding or creating something better. Pijul appears to be a strong contender, though it is as yet very niche (there's not even a Wikipedia page for it!).
Older popular VCS software includes:
- CVS: centralized control
- Subversion (SVN): widely used in the late 1990s and early 200Xs; centralized control
- Microsoft Visual SourceSafe (VSS): proprietary; centralized control
