Factors which make phone interviews difficult include:
- I have always had phone phobia. For the purpose of conducting job interviews I have been able to cope with it via a variety of techniques -- but these techniques make it possible, not easy or comfortable, to do.
- Even using these techniques, I still find it much easier to be coherent and thoughtful when typing than when speaking aloud. I can represent myself much more accurately/positively in text.
- These techniques also tend to require some preparation, meaning that I need to spend additional time/effort getting ready before the scheduled time.
- I also still experience acute anxiety leading up to the call, which tends to make it difficult to be productive for several hours beforehand.
- As of 2022, voice-dysphoria remains an issue for me, adding further to the overall stress.
I conducted a number of phone interviews in 2021 and 2022 despite all these factors.
What finally crossed the line for me was a pair of recent incidents where a phone interview was scheduled and then never occurred.
In the first case, the recruiter was apologetic and asked me to reschedule. I sent him an email with some questions, to which he never responded.

It's bad enough to do interview after interview and still not get an offer. I am, quite frankly, done with also putting hours of stress into each of these conversations, even when they don't happen.
