It turns out that PHP's ssh2 library is known for being unstable across releases, and (as of this writing) is unusuable for SFTP.
Enter phpseclib, an implementation of SSH2 written entirely in PHP.
Rather than just use it right out of the box, which itself apparently pulls in pieces of at least one other library (Symfony) and duplicates a lot of Ferreteria's functionality, I'm ruthlessly adapting the core functionality to work within Ferreteria.
