FTM rewrite

I was getting timeouts (more than 10 seconds with no screen output), which turned out to be because of loading some very large folders with no screen updates. "[I'm] trying to break that process out a bit so it can pulse the heartbeat (thus preventing timeout and also let me know what's happening), but running into logic errors." Upon fixing them, their nature made me wonder why it ever worked...
